About Marcell
A Nova Scotia–born original, Marcell Symonds has been touching hearts, putting smiles on faces, and captivating audiences with his smooth, soulful vocals and effortless charisma. Known for his natural stage presence and heartfelt delivery, Marcell brings every performance to life — whether in gospel, R&B, country, contemporary, or Christmas music.
From a young age, Marcell knew he was meant to sing and entertain. His powerful and versatile voice has taken him far beyond his Halifax roots — across Nova Scotia and the Maritimes, throughout Canada in cities like Montreal, Toronto, London, Wainwright, and Calgary, and internationally to Buffalo, Oslo, and even Lagos, Nigeria — where he proudly performed in the Motherland.
Growing up the son of a Baptist minister, Marcell began his musical journey at Emmanuel Baptist Church (now EBC – The Meeting Place) in Upper Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. He later honed his craft at the Maritime Conservatory of Music (1969–1979), earning a Diploma in Vocal Techniques with Honours.
From 1982 to 1992, Marcell served in the Canadian Armed Forces, where he had the opportunity to showcase his vocal talent across Canada, the United States, and abroad, performing at military bases and private events.
Today, Marcell’s longevity and passion for music make him a true trendsetter and musical pioneer within African Nova Scotian communities. His voice and leadership continue to promote and preserve the rich musical heritage of Black Nova Scotia.
Through MarcellSings.ca, he proudly supports mental health awareness, women’s rights, and the LGBTQIA+ community, using his platform to inspire unity, respect, and hope through song.
