Musical Experience

With decades of live performance, recording, and musical leadership, Marcell Symonds stands as one of Nova Scotia’s most experienced and versatile vocalists. His journey spans stage, studio, television, and radio—showcasing a lifelong dedication to soulful, professional artistry.

Early Years Education

Marcell began performing as a guest soloist and male lead vocalist in school variety shows and musicals from 1966 to 1978, developing the confidence and charisma that would define his career.

He earned a Diploma in Voice (Honours) from the Maritime Conservatory of Music between 1969 and 1979, where he studied advanced vocal techniques and performance.

National & International Performances

In 1977, Marcell was selected to represent Nova Scotia as part of a Canadian musical delegation performing at the 2nd World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture in Lagos, Nigeria — a historic global celebration of Black excellence in the arts. He later performed both the Canadian and American national anthems for Halifax’s first professional basketball team, the Windjammers (1991–1992), and continued as anthem soloist for special events, including:

  • NHL exhibition game between the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens at the Halifax Scotiabank Centre

  • Multiple appearances as anthem singer for the Halifax Mooseheads

Studio Media Work

Marcell’s smooth, distinctive voice has been featured in numerous radio jingles for well-known brands such as Sobeys, Clover Group, Bayers Road Shopping Centre, Honda, Atlantic Acura, and the Downtown Halifax Business Commission.

He has also appeared on ATV, Breakfast Television, CBC, and CTV, bringing his soulful performances to television and radio audiences across the region.

Competitions Awards

Marcell’s talent has earned multiple accolades throughout Atlantic Canada:

  • 2nd Place - Atlantic Vocal Competition (Crickets, 1990)

  • 1st Place - Atlantic Vocal Competition (Crickets, 1991)

  • 1st Place - Atlantic Talent Search (Big Leagues, 1992)

  • 1st Place - Esso Talent Search (Dartmouth, 1992)

  • 1st Place - Maritime Karaoke Championships (Halifax Hilton, 1992)

Recording Songwriting

Marcell wrote, recorded, and performed “Precious Children,” dedicated to the children of the IWK Hospital.

He released his first gospel album, “Just a Closer Walk” in August 2014, and later wrote and recorded “Stand Up for Change,” a powerful tribute to Viola Desmond.

His vocals are also featured on the Christmas album “Yuletide Cheer.”

Bands Collaborations

A former member and soloist of the Nova Scotia Mass Choir, Marcell continues to collaborate with leading East Coast musicians.

Recent appearances include performances with two of Halifax’s top dance bands: Asia Nu Gruv and Rasta Gumbo.

He is also the lead vocalist for both MarcellSings.ca and the acoustic duo STiCK&SLiDE, where his smooth tone and soulful delivery continue to delight audiences.
